The project is based on a proactive approach by the Moroccan Bank of Foreign Commerce (BMCE Bank of Africa) which, with a view to sustainable finance, wished to be able to
best support its customers in the protection of water resources. He participates in
the deepening of the partnership between BMCE Bank of Africa and AFD, in the continuity
of the MorSEFF (Moroccan Sustainable Energy Financing Facilities) program, for which
AFD1 has already granted two lines of credit to BMCE Bank of Africa for the promotion of
energy efficiency and renewable energies in Morocco.
The project aims to facilitate the emergence and financing of public and private projects that
will help preserve Morocco's water resources and thus increase the resilience of the
countries to climate change.
Its main objectives are:
(i) develop industrial depollution and recycling and reuse projects for
water in Morocco, in particular by encouraging manufacturers to better equip themselves, and
(ii) to support BMCE's interest in this type of investment, by contributing
in particular to reduce the obstacles to their financing.
A memorandum of understanding between BMCE Bank, the EIB (co-financier) and AFD was signed at
the occasion of the COP 22. This project will be a first in Morocco and could serve as a pilot
to generate a ripple effect on the sector and help bring out new
investment potentials.
